The car is a massive contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Much of the environmental impact of cars comes from the manufacturing and maintenance of them, so it’s a good idea to try and avoid buying one in the first place.
It is also considered in many parts of the world as a status symbol which is something that adds to the contemporary problem of them as people are less inclined to try without.
If giving up the car altogether isn’t an option then aim to reduce the amount of trips you make.
Consider walking or catching public transport instead of driving. Traveling by a different mode of transport even one day a week will make a big difference. Plan ahead so that short car trips can be avoided and set yourself distance targets (e.g. 5 km) under which you will not drive.
Next time you’re about to jump in the car to travel to the corner store think about the real impact you’re having on the earth and consider going for a stroll or riding your bike instead.
