Governmental Community

The Governments of the world, at all levels – local, state, federal, & the United Nations; play a vital role in the realisation of global environmental sustainability.

There are so many areas that must be covered in order to attain environmental sustainability, which is why it’s good in a way that there are so many levels of government the world over. It means that problem areas, from a worldwide scale to the local scale, can be micromanaged.

Governments must implement legislation that stipulate environmentally changes be made. E.g. say that a high % of energy must come from clean energy by 2020 thus providing a certain market for innovation. Governments must implement targeted subsidies, rebates, mandates, ordinances; all of which would bring about an increase in environmentally sustainable practices.

The main issue on the global scale is carbon emissions, as these levels getting too high effects the world all over. Governments must come up with an agreement on curbing carbon emissions so that their reduction has the desired effect. Developed countries must help undeveloped countries in their efforts to arrive at a low carbon future as we’re all in this together.

Innovative thinking is required. Industries that are a big problem to the world’s quest for sustainability cannot be supported simply because there are jobs attached to them. Instead, thinking outside the square here must take place in order to reposition those workers into sustainable industries. Industries that are high carbon emitters must be strongly encouraged to invest in sustainable industry.

Environmental sustainability is a worldwide solution & it must be achieved. Governments must work together to achieve it.
